Build surfaces compared: PEI, glass and textured plates

Smooth PEI, textured PEI, glass and the rest — what each is actually good at, which filaments they fight with, and when a worn sheet is your real problem.

The build surface decides whether a print sticks, whether it comes off afterwards, and what the bottom looks like. Modern spring-steel sheets with a PEI coating have largely won, and for good reason — but which coating matters.

Smooth PEI

Excellent grip on PLA, and it leaves a glossy, almost mirror-smooth bottom surface that looks superb on flat parts. The catch is PETG, which bonds to smooth PEI so enthusiastically that it can tear chunks out of the sheet when removed. Use a glue stick as a release layer for PETG, or keep a different plate for it.

Textured PEI

The powder-coated sheets. Grip comes from mechanical key rather than pure adhesion, which makes release far more forgiving — parts pop off as the plate cools with little drama, and PETG behaves itself. The bottom surface gets a pleasant matte, slightly stippled finish, which most people prefer on functional parts and some dislike on flat display pieces.

If you are buying one plate and you print a mix of materials, this is the one.

Glass

The traditional answer. Dead flat, which genuinely helps on printers with a warped bed, and it produces a very glossy bottom. It needs adhesive for most filaments, it is heavy enough to matter on a bed-slinger at speed, and it can shatter. Largely superseded, but still the right call if your bed has a dip that mesh levelling struggles with.

Other coatings

When the surface is genuinely worn out

PEI loses grip with age and use. The signs are prints lifting at corners on settings that used to work, and a surface that looks glazed or shiny in the areas you print on most. A wash with warm water and detergent restores a surprising amount — it is usually grease, not wear. If a proper clean does not fix it, the sheet is done.

Gouges never recover. This is the argument for a plastic scraper rather than a metal one — see print removal tools.

Two practical notes

First, Z offset is per-plate. Sheets differ in thickness, and swapping without re-checking gives you a first layer that is suddenly wrong. See first layer calibration.

Second, buy the size for your machine. Build plates are not standard and a sheet that overhangs the magnet is worse than useless.
