Wash and cure stations: worth it?
A combined washer and UV curer is convenience, not magic. What it replaces, when the DIY version is genuinely fine, and the one thing it does better than improvising.
Every resin print needs washing and curing. A station does both in one box with a timer. The question is whether that is worth the money over a jar of isopropyl alcohol and a UV lamp, and the honest answer is: it depends how much you print.
What the two steps actually do
- Washing removes the film of uncured resin left on the print. Skip it and the surface stays tacky, detail is blurred, and you are handling uncured resin every time you touch the model.
- Curing finishes the polymerisation. An unwashed or uncured print stays soft, weak and slightly sticky, and it will yellow.
Both are mandatory. The only question is the equipment.
The DIY version, which genuinely works
A sealed jar of IPA and a bit of agitation washes a print perfectly well. A cheap UV nail lamp cures small prints; a UV strip in a box lined with foil handles larger ones. Turning the print halfway through covers the shaded side. Total cost is small.
This is entirely adequate if you print occasionally. Plenty of people never move beyond it.
Where a station earns its money
- Contained mess. The single biggest practical benefit. A sealed washing basket with a magnetic stirrer means far less IPA on the desk, on your gloves and evaporating into the room.
- Even curing. A turntable with UV from multiple angles cures consistently. A single lamp leaves shaded areas soft, which shows up later as distortion or discoloration.
- Timers. Over-curing makes prints brittle and yellow. A timer stops the “I left it under the lamp all afternoon” problem.
- Repeatability. Same wash time, same cure time, same result — which matters once you care about consistency.
What to check before buying
Capacity is the one people get wrong: the wash basket and the cure chamber must fit your printer’s build plate, and some stations are sized for smaller machines. Check the stated dimensions against your plate, not against your printer’s footprint.
Also worth having: a wavelength around 405 nm to match standard resins, a chamber that seals (UV is bad for eyes), and a basket you can lift out without dripping.
Do not over-cure
More curing is not better. A few minutes is usually plenty for a small print; extended exposure makes photopolymer brittle and yellow, particularly with clear resins. If your prints snap easily, over-curing is a likely culprit.
