Bambu Lab A1 3D Printer, Ready-to-Use FDM 3D Printer for Beginners and Kids
Our review: Bambu Lab A1
Desk research, not hands-on testing: specifications, independent reviews, documented issues and buyer data. Both scores are calculated from the inputs listed below. How we score
Verdict: The A1 brings the A1 mini’s effortless setup to a full-size 256 mm bed, which makes it one of the best all-round first printers. Early units were recalled over a heatbed cable; the fix is free, but worth knowing about with old stock or second-hand machines.
10 / 10 Technical difficulty: Low
7.3 / 10 From buyer ratings, track record and known issues
- 256 × 256 × 256 mm build volume covers nearly everything a home user prints
- Fully automatic calibration, including flow, so the first layer looks after itself
- Tool-free quick-swap hotend rated to 300°C
- Quiet for a full-size printer, with noise quoted in the high 40s dB in silent mode
- Built-in camera, touchscreen and an optional AMS lite four-colour combo
- Early units were recalled in 2024 over a heatbed cable fault, fixed with a free replacement
- Bed-slinger: it needs clear space front and back for the moving bed
- Open frame: not suited to ABS or ASA
- Closely tied to Bambu’s own software and cloud
Best for: Most first-time buyers who want a full-size printer that sets itself up and prints PLA, PETG and TPU with little fuss.
Look elsewhere if: You want to print ABS or ASA, which need an enclosure, or your desk lacks depth for a moving bed.

Who it suits
If someone asks for one printer to recommend to a beginner who wants to make practical things, the A1 is the obvious candidate. It has the same self-calibrating, app-driven simplicity as the A1 mini, on a 256 mm bed that fits almost anything a household prints.
Setting it up
It arrives assembled and calibrates itself: bed levelling, vibration compensation and flow calibration all run automatically. You connect it to the Bambu Handy app or Bambu Studio and print. Every item on our ease-of-use checklist is ticked.
Printing with it
The A1 is a bed-slinger: the bed moves back and forth while the print head moves side to side, guided by linear rails. That keeps the price down and makes the print easy to see and reach. It also means you need clearance front and back, and very tall, thin prints get shaken more than on a CoreXY printer. See bed-slinger vs CoreXY.
PLA, PETG and TPU are its comfort zone. The quick-swap hotend reaches 300°C, but as an open-frame printer it is not the right tool for ABS or ASA.
The recall
In early 2024, Bambu Lab recalled A1 printers because the heatbed cable on early units could be damaged, creating an electric shock and fire risk. The fix was a free replacement cable. It is a documented safety issue, so it costs the A1 one point on our reliability indicator. In practice it matters most if you buy old stock, Warehouse or second-hand: check the unit is covered or already fixed using Bambu’s recall page, linked in the sources below.
Living with it
It is quiet for a full-size printer, and the built-in camera and app make it easy to leave running. As with the A1 mini, the whole experience is designed around Bambu’s software and cloud, which beginners tend to love and tinkerers tend not to. The AMS lite combo adds four-colour printing if you want it.
Is today’s price a good deal?
