Our review: ELEGOO Mars 5 Ultra

Desk research, not hands-on testing: specifications, independent reviews, documented issues and buyer data. Both scores are calculated from the inputs listed below. How we score

Cheaper right now: another listing of the ELEGOO Mars 5 Ultra at £269.99. Check what is in the box, as listings often differ by bundle.

Verdict: A compact resin printer that removes most of the manual steps: it levels itself, watches prints with an AI camera, warns about low resin and takes files over Wi-Fi. It has no vat heating or filter as standard, and its 165 mm height limits taller models.

Ease of use
6 / 10
Technical difficulty: Medium
Reliability indicator
5.6 / 10
From buyer ratings, track record and known issues
Upsides
  • 7-inch 9K screen (8520 × 4320) with 18 µm detail
  • Automatic levelling, plus detection of low resin, foreign objects and a worn release film
  • AI camera flags problems such as an empty build plate or a warped model
  • Wi-Fi file transfer, with no USB stick needed
  • Tilt release for speeds up to 150 mm/h
Downsides
  • No vat heating; ELEGOO’s Mini Heater is an optional extra
  • No built-in air filter
  • 165 mm build height limits taller models
  • The metal resin vat bolts down rather than using a quick latch
  • Every print needs washing, curing, gloves and ventilation

Best for: Newcomers to resin who want miniature-level detail with as few manual steps as possible.
Look elsewhere if: You will print in a cold garage without adding a heater, or want tall or large parts.

Who it suits

The Mars 5 Ultra, launched in July 2024, is a compact resin printer that asks very little of a newcomer. It suits people who want to print miniatures and small models and would rather the printer handled levelling and error-spotting for them.

Why it scores 6 for ease of use

It levels itself with a built-in sensor, and its detection system warns about low resin, foreign objects in the vat, a release film that needs replacing and an overheating light source. An AI camera spots problems such as an empty build plate or a warped model, and files arrive over Wi-Fi.

It misses the points for vat heating and an air filter, both optional extras rather than built in, and takes the 2-point resin workflow deduction. That makes it a Medium difficulty, a real step easier than the manually levelled Anycubic Photon Mono 4 series.

Printing with it

The 7-inch 9K screen resolves 18 µm detail, and tilt release lets it print at up to 150 mm of height per hour. The build volume, about 153 × 78 × 165 mm, is plenty for miniatures, but reviewers note the 165 mm height is its one real limit.

Without vat heating, room temperature matters. In a cold UK room or garage, resin thickens and prints fail more often, so plan for a warm space or add ELEGOO’s optional heater, which the lid is designed to take.

Living with it

The resin vat is sturdy metal, but it bolts down rather than latching, which makes swapping or cleaning it slower. Budget for gloves, a way to wash and cure prints, and replacement release film. See resin vat care and cleaning and resin safety.
