Our review: Original Prusa MK4S
Desk research, not hands-on testing: specifications, independent reviews, documented issues and buyer data. Both scores are calculated from the inputs listed below. How we score
Verdict: A precise, open, well-documented workhorse whose load-cell nozzle probing gets the first layer right without manual levelling. It costs far more than enclosed rivals with cameras and multi-colour, and the kit version is a substantial build.
6 / 10 Technical difficulty: Medium
5.6 / 10 From buyer ratings, track record and known issues
- Load-cell sensor probes the bed with the nozzle itself, so there is no manual levelling or Z-offset
- Wi-Fi and Ethernet, with Prusa Connect and the Prusa app
- 290°C nozzle and 120°C bed, plus a filament sensor
- The hotend releases with two thumbscrews for quick nozzle changes
- Open-source firmware, detailed guides and a kit option for people who like to build
- Far more expensive than enclosed, camera-equipped rivals
- Open-frame bed-slinger: not suited to ABS or ASA without an enclosure
- No built-in camera; the Buddy3D camera is an optional extra
- The kit version is a substantial build rather than a quick setup
- 250 × 210 × 220 mm build volume is smaller than many cheaper printers
Best for: Buyers who value open-source firmware, documentation and spare-part support over headline features, and makers who would enjoy building the kit.
Look elsewhere if: You want the most features for the money, an enclosure for ABS, or a built-in camera.

Who it suits
Prusa printers have long been the choice of people who want a machine they can understand, repair and keep running for years. The MK4S, announced in August 2024, continues that: open-source firmware, detailed documentation, and the option to buy it as a kit and build it yourself. It suits careful buyers, schools and makers more than bargain hunters.
Setting it up
The fully assembled version is quick to get going. Instead of a separate probe, a load cell in the extruder senses when the nozzle itself touches the bed, measuring both the bed shape and the first-layer gap, so there is nothing to level by hand. The kit version is the same printer in parts, and building it is a project in its own right, so our ease-of-use score for the kit listing is 2 points lower.
The assembled MK4S scores 8. It misses the camera point, since the Buddy3D camera is sold separately, and the automatic calibration point: its input shaping uses tuned settings rather than measuring the printer itself.
Printing with it
The 290°C nozzle and 120°C bed cover PLA, PETG, TPU and more, and the MK4S added improved cooling and a high-flow nozzle over the MK4. It is an open-frame bed-slinger, so ABS and ASA need an enclosure. See enclosed vs open frame. At 250 × 210 × 220 mm, the build volume is adequate but not generous.
Living with it
Wi-Fi and Ethernet with Prusa Connect make remote printing simple, a filament sensor guards long prints, and the hotend releases with two thumbscrews for quick nozzle changes. The appeal is less any single feature than the ecosystem around it: documentation, firmware updates and parts availability.
Is today’s price a good deal?
The MK4S is rarely the cheapest route to a given feature, and it is priced very differently as a kit and assembled. Decide which you want first, then compare it with the Bambu Lab P1S and other enclosed printers in our review table.
