What a 3D scanner is actually for

A 3D scanner captures the shape of a real object as a mesh you can edit, print or use as a reference. That is genuinely useful for replacing a broken part, fitting something to an existing shape, or digitising a model. It is not a photocopier: a scan almost always needs cleaning up in software before it can be printed, and that step is where most of the work is.

These listings are ordered by Amazon sales rank, for the same reason as printers — there is no honest per-unit number to rank a scanner on. The On offer now filter shows only the ones with a live price drop.

The two technologies

• Structured light. Projects a pattern onto the object and reads the distortion. Accurate on small and medium objects, struggles outdoors and in bright light. This is what most consumer scanners are.
• Laser (line or dot). Generally better on dark and shiny surfaces and at larger sizes, usually more expensive.

What limits the result

Three things ruin scans, and none of them are fixed by paying more:

• Shiny, dark or transparent surfaces. The scanner cannot see them. The standard fix is a light dusting of matting spray, which is a consumable you should budget for.
• Deep recesses and thin features. If the sensor cannot see into a hole, no amount of resolution will recover it.
• Movement. Handheld scanning of an object that shifts, or of a person, is much harder than the marketing suggests.

Be realistic about accuracy claims

Quoted accuracy figures (often “0.05 mm”) are measured under ideal conditions on an ideal object. Real-world results on a matte, well-lit, stationary part are usually good; results on a black glossy component held in your hand are not. If you need a scan to be dimensionally correct for a fitted part, expect to verify critical measurements with calipers regardless of what the scanner reports.

What do 3D scanners cost?

Far wider a spread than printers: under £200 to over £4,500 on this page. The capability does not rise smoothly with the price either — there are two hard steps, and long stretches in between where you are paying for software, bundled tripods and turntables, and speed.

• Under about £300. Entry structured-light handhelds, tethered to a PC or phone, around 0.1 mm point accuracy. Fine for fist-sized matte objects indoors; no useful volumetric figure, so large objects drift.
• £300–£700. Where scanning becomes pleasant rather than a fight. Better tracking, usable colour, and the first specialised models — small-object scanners and infrared models for faces. The right band for most people scanning things to print.
• £700–£1,500. The first real step change: multi-line blue laser, which works outdoors and on dark or glossy surfaces, plus a published volumetric accuracy figure and often wireless operation.
• £1,500–£3,000. The second step change: standalone scanners with their own screen, processor and battery, aimed at reverse engineering and site work.
• £3,000 and up. Professional equipment for inspection and engineering, where a documented accuracy specification is part of the job.

Which type do you need?

• Small rigid objects, on a desk, repeatedly — a turntable, or a handheld bundled with one.
• Mixed medium-sized parts around the house — handheld with a turntable in the box. This suits most buyers.
• Large parts, vehicles, installed machinery — handheld blue laser, and read the volumetric figure rather than the headline one.
• People and pets — handheld with near-infrared and a high frame rate.
• Miniatures under about 30 mm — a dedicated small-object scanner, because many handhelds cannot focus that close.

Before you buy: the scan is not the finished file

A raw scan has holes, noise, stray geometry and no thickness, and a slicer needs a closed watertight mesh. Cropping, merging passes, filling holes and decimating the mesh takes longer than the scanning itself, and for precise mechanical parts calipers and CAD are genuinely the better tool.
