FDM vs resin: which type of 3D printer should a beginner buy?
Filament printers make tough, practical parts; resin printers make astonishing detail and a lot of mess. What each is genuinely good at, what living with resin involves, and how to choose.
There are two kinds of consumer 3D printer, and they are different enough that choosing between them matters more than choosing between brands.
- FDM (filament) printers melt a plastic thread and draw each layer with a moving nozzle. This is what most people picture.
- Resin (MSLA) printers cure a liquid resin with light shone up through a screen, one whole layer at a time, pulling the part upward out of a vat.
What FDM is good at
Practical parts. Filament prints are strong enough to use: brackets, clips, enclosures, tool holders, replacement parts, anything that gets handled or loaded. The materials are cheap, safe to handle, and come in dozens of types, from easy PLA to tough PETG and flexible TPU.
The workflow is clean. A finished print comes off the bed ready to use, perhaps after snipping off some support material. There are no chemicals and no gloves.
The trade-off is surface finish. Layer lines are visible, fine detail softens, and very small features — a miniature’s fingers, fine text — are beyond what a standard nozzle can draw.
What resin is good at
Detail. A modern resin printer resolves features far finer than any filament printer, and layer lines are close to invisible. For miniatures, figurines, jewellery masters and display models, nothing at home comes close.
The trade-offs are real and daily:
- Every print needs washing and curing. Parts come out coated in uncured resin, which must be washed off and then cured under UV light.
- Resin is a skin sensitiser. Nitrile gloves are not optional, and sensitivity can develop after repeated casual contact and not go away.
- It needs ventilation and a space you do not mind being a little chemical.
- Waste needs care. Uncured resin, wash liquid and paper towels cannot go down the drain or straight in the bin.
- Parts are more brittle than filament prints, and build volumes are smaller for the money.
None of this makes resin a bad choice. It makes it a hobby with a workflow, rather than a printer you press go on. Read resin safety, ventilation and disposal before deciding.
How the running costs compare
Filament is cheap per part: a kilogram of mainstream PLA typically costs around £10–£15, and most prints use a few tens of grams. Resin costs more per part, and the extras add up: isopropyl alcohol (unless you use water-washable resin), gloves, filter papers, and a replaceable film in the vat. So which should you buy?
- If you want to make useful things, buy FDM. This is most people.
- If you want to paint miniatures and are comfortable with gloves and a ventilated space, resin is worth it, and you will not be satisfied with anything less.
- If you are not sure, buy FDM. It is the more forgiving hobby to start in, and a surprising number of people who start with resin for detail end up adding a filament printer for everything else.
- If it is for children, buy FDM. The resin handling rules out most households with young kids.
