How much should you spend on a 3D printer? UK price bands explained
What roughly £150, £250, £350 and £500 buy you in a 3D printer today, where the big jumps in usefulness are, and why the cheapest printer is rarely the cheapest to own.
3D printer prices have fallen hard. Features that cost £800 a few years ago — automatic levelling, fast CoreXY motion, enclosures, multi-colour — now turn up in machines well under half that. So the question is less "what can I afford" than "where does spending more stop being worth it".
The bands below describe what is typical at the time of writing (September 2026). Prices move constantly: every printer we track is listed with its live price, and each printer page shows how today’s price compares with its own history.
Around £150–£200: capable starter printers
This band now buys a genuinely good first printer, not a compromise. Expect automatic bed levelling, a textured build plate, reasonable speed and app control from the better brands. Small-format printers such as the Bambu Lab A1 mini sit here, as do open-frame full-size machines like the ELEGOO Neptune 4 Pro.
What you give up: build volume on the small machines, an enclosure, and usually a camera. Some printers in this band still arrive partly assembled, which matters more than it sounds. Check before you buy.
Around £200–£300: the sweet spot for most people
This is where most first-time buyers should look. Full-size, fully automatic, fast printers that arrive assembled, and at the top of the band, enclosed CoreXY machines such as the ELEGOO Centauri Carbon and entry multi-colour systems like the Flashforge AD5X.
The jump from £150 to £250 buys the most usefulness per pound of anywhere on the price scale: more build volume, less tuning, and features that save time on every print.
Around £300–£400: enclosed, fast and polished
Enclosed high-speed printers with cameras, filtration and mature software, like the Bambu Lab P1S and the Flashforge Adventurer 5M Pro. You are paying for the ability to print ABS and ASA properly, for quieter and cleaner operation, and for the confidence of a very refined ecosystem.
Worth it if you will print engineering materials or run the printer somewhere people live. Less worth it if you only ever print PLA.
£450 and up: multi-colour and serious capability
Mostly the same printers as the band below, bundled with an automatic multi-material system, or larger and more capable machines. Multi-colour is genuinely fun and genuinely wasteful — read whether multi-colour is worth it before paying for it.
Why the cheapest printer is rarely the cheapest to own
A printer that saves £40 but takes three evenings to set up, fails one print in five, and needs a £30 upgrade to work properly has cost you more. The expensive part of 3D printing is your time and wasted filament, not the machine.
Three questions separate a real bargain from a false economy:
- Does it level itself? If not, walk away — see why it matters.
- Does it arrive assembled?
- Can you buy spare nozzles and build plates for it easily in the UK?
Budget for the extras
Set aside roughly £30–£50 on top of the printer for two spools of filament, a spare nozzle, and a sealed box with desiccant to keep filament dry. The full picture is in the real cost of owning a 3D printer.
