How to choose your first 3D printer
Start with what you want to make, not the spec sheet. The handful of features that decide whether a first printer is a joy or a weekend-eater, and the ones you can safely ignore.
Buying a first 3D printer is harder than it should be, because the listings compete on the numbers that matter least. Top speed, "AI" features and maximum nozzle temperature dominate the headlines. What decides whether you enjoy the thing is duller: how long it takes to get a good first print, and how often it fails after that.
Start with what you want to make
Everything else follows from this, so be specific:
- Practical parts — brackets, hooks, organisers, replacement knobs, things for the garage. You want a filament (FDM) printer, and PLA or PETG will cover nearly all of it.
- Miniatures and fine detail — tabletop figures, jewellery masters, dental or display models. This is where a resin printer earns its extra mess. See FDM vs resin.
- Things for children to design and print — prioritise a small, enclosed or very simple machine and an app with a model library, over speed or size.
- Cosplay props and big pieces — build volume starts to matter, but less than people think. See how big a build volume you need.
If you cannot yet say what you will make, buy for practical parts. It is the most forgiving starting point and the most likely to become a habit.
The features that actually matter for a beginner
Automatic bed levelling. This is the single biggest quality-of-life feature, and in 2026 there is no reason to buy a printer without it. A first layer that sits at the wrong height causes most early failures, and doing it by hand with a sheet of paper is exactly the chore that makes people give up. See auto bed levelling explained.
Arrives assembled. Some printers are a 15-minute unbox; others are a kit that takes an evening and can be built slightly out of square, which then causes problems you will spend weeks chasing. For a first printer, pay for assembled.
Good slicer profiles. The slicer turns a 3D model into instructions for your printer. Brands that ship tested profiles for their own printers and filaments save you from tuning settings you do not yet understand. This is a large part of why the closed, app-driven ecosystems are so popular with beginners.
Parts you can actually buy. Nozzles wear, build plates lose grip, cables fail. A printer from a brand with UK stock of spares will outlive one where a £10 part ships from abroad in three weeks.
What sounds important but mostly is not
- Maximum speed. "600 mm/s" is a travel figure under ideal conditions. Real prints run far slower, and between current printers the difference in how long a typical part takes is much smaller than the headline suggests.
- A huge build volume. Almost everything people print fits on a 220 × 220 mm bed. Bigger machines cost more, take more space, and take longer to heat.
- Very high nozzle temperatures. Useful for engineering materials like nylon and polycarbonate. Irrelevant if you will print PLA and PETG, which is almost everyone to start with.
- An enclosure — unless you plan to print ABS or ASA. Then it matters a lot. See enclosed vs open frame.
Set a budget, including the extras
The printer is not the whole cost. Budget for a couple of spools of filament, a spare nozzle or two and somewhere dry to keep the plastic. The price bands, and what each one buys you, are in how much to spend on a 3D printer, and the ongoing costs are in the real cost of owning one.
