How big a build volume do you need?

Most prints fit on a far smaller bed than listings suggest. What fits on 100, 180, 220 and 256 mm printers, the hidden costs of going bigger, and why splitting a model is often the better answer.

Build volume is the largest object a printer can make in one piece, given as width × depth × height. It is one of the easiest numbers to compare, so it gets a lot of attention. For most buyers, it deserves less.

What fits on each size

Around 100 mm (mini printers such as the WEEFUN Tina2S). Keyrings, small toys, cable clips, figurines, chess pieces. Fine for children’s projects and learning; frustrating once you want to make anything for the house.

Around 180 mm (compact printers such as the Bambu Lab A1 mini). Most practical parts: brackets, organisers, phone stands, replacement knobs and small enclosures. You will occasionally meet a model that needs splitting.

Around 220 mm (the long-standing standard, and printers such as the Flashforge Adventurer 5M). The large majority of models shared online are designed to fit this size, because it has been the common bed for years.

Around 256 mm (the current mainstream, including the Bambu Lab A1 and P1S and the ELEGOO Centauri Carbon). Comfortable headroom: larger storage boxes, vases, bigger tool holders, and most cosplay pieces with a bit of splitting.

300 mm and above. Full-size helmets in one piece, large props, big enclosures. Useful for specific projects, rarely necessary for a first printer.

The hidden costs of a bigger bed

One thing a bigger printer does not do is print a given object faster or slower. Print time depends on the model, not the size of the bed around it.

Splitting a model is normal

Large prints are often better in parts anyway. Splitting a model lets you orient each piece for strength and surface finish, reduces support material, and means a failure late in the print costs you one section rather than the whole thing. Most slicers can cut a model, and many designers already supply large models in pieces with alignment pins or keys. Superglue, plastic welding and printed dowels join them well.

Resin printers are different

Resin build volumes are much smaller for the money. The Anycubic Photon Mono 4, for example, builds 153 × 87 × 165 mm. That is plenty for miniatures, which is what resin is for, but a poor fit for large parts. See FDM vs resin.
